Week 2 - July 17th, 2017

day 6
Wow, time has flown by so fast. It is already week 2 of MedEx.
In the morning, we finished up our "Body Stories" research. My group rehearsed over our presentation so many times, that we basically have it drilled in our head. Hopefully our presentation will be awesome tomorrow. It is about a male undergoing a ruptured spleen. My group is in charge of explaining the symptoms, treatments, types of splenectomys, and ect. It was a difficult task going into it since I have never studied the spleen into detail. We decided to open up the presentation with a story of how it happened to this male. Since 17-25 year olds were in the room, we decided to make our patients spleen rupture due to texting and driving. We are hoping to enforce a strong subject that we all believe in while also educating our audience about our Body Story.
A little later into the hour, tier four students came over to our tables to give us advice on our projects and college in general. The tier three students were very nice and helpful. Two of them were from USC, one was from Furman, and the other was from Clemson. It was really interesting listening to them try to sell us their school. I asked many questions especially about Clemson. They all enjoy and appreciate where they go. They also told us advice for applying to college, and life in general. I really appreciated time with them and I loved hearing what they had to say about their college experience along with the transition from high school to college.
Today we started the day of with a few career lectures. One of them that I loved was CRNA. I have not really given that occupation a thought yet, and since we listened more about it, I've been researching it. Mr. Richard Wilson told us how much he loved his job and that he wouldn't choose anything else. As soon as he started his lecture, he noticed that we all were taking notes. Instead of note taking, he wanted us to absorb the information so he told us to put our notebooks us and just be engaged in the conversation. He made that very easy. I really admired his confidence and motivation to constantly succeed. We all want to succeed and hearing it for him, a man a who was determined to do what he wants to, was amazing. He had a passion for it, and explained in detail of how hard we have to work to get to that position. That presentation got me to think about my future and how hard I have to work to have a lifetime of success. I can be anything I want to, all I need is determination and perseverance.
Today was also Sarah's birthday so we decided to go to Menchies for frozen yogurt. It as so crowded, considering how small Menchies is. We had invited the interns so they also came an joined us. We filled the entire store. It was a good end to a Monday!

Day 7 - July 18th 2017
Today we had a nutritionist come and educate us about our health. She explained how to us how to eat healthier, and also what to avoid. I definitely learned a lot about the foods I eat and do not eat. Also, exercise is so important for the body. It does so much more than losing weight, it keeps you healthy.

Later on in the day, we did a "Disease Outbreak" simulation. This simulation taught us more about our environment, and safety tips about outbreaks along with out to identify that it is an outbreak.

Towards the end of the day we presented our "Body Stories" presentation in front of Tier1, Tier 3 and faculty. It was a very nerve wracking presentation but it was also so much of fun. Being the second group to present, I was scared. We got up infront many people, introduced ourselves and began. After I told the audience who I was, my nerves began to calm down a little. They grilled us on questions, but I think we handled and answered them pretty well. However, once it was over, I missed it. This was the first time I presented in front of doctors, so of course I was nervous, however, I am so proud of myself. It takes a lot of confidence to speak to that many people and I conquered it, Our group did so well!

Mr. Squire ended the day with a wonderful speech about being on our "Green" performance. It was such an amazing and motivational speech. It taught us to push harder than our "good". It made me feel confident and motivated. We realized that being in High School, and thinking about college, we get stressed and sometimes we want to give up. Sometimes we settle for just average when we know very well that we can give stellar. Mr. Squire convinced us that we need to push, no matter how hard we want to give up. Right after that bit of pain, comes mountains of success.

Day 8 - july 19th, 2017
Today we had a crash course in medicine. It exposed us to different opportunities in the healthcare field. It was really awesome to learn about and act out with our peers. We also had an Emergency Pediatric tell us about her career. It is much more difficult handling kids than adults. However, she has a passion for what she does so she loves it. It can be a very stressful and traumatic job to handle every day though. She told us that if we do choose that career, we have to be strong because she comes across many heartbreaking cases. However, at the end of the day she is helping the children- not hurting them. That's all that matters.

Day 9, July 20th,2017
A physical therapist came in today and told us about her profession. She also mentioned Occupational Therapy which caught my attention. Once we toured the hospital, I met an Occupational Therapist and her patient. They had a very close bond and she seemed like she loved her job. I really enjoyed that along with how she explained what she does. She told us about many other types of therapies that I didn't even know existed. It fascinated me of how there are so many careers in the world, and I can pick and one of them!
Day 10, 2017
